Biography

Hayaka Komatsu began playing the viola at age sixteen. Formerly, she studied violin with Li Lin and viola with Jodi Levits in the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory Division. Under the tutelage of Masao Kawasaki, she received her BM in 2017 from The Juilliard School. In the fall, she began her M.M. at Yale with Steven Tenenbom. Recently she has participated in masterclasses with Helen Callus, Samuel Rhodes, and Paul Neubauer.

In recent years, she has won the ASTA Viola Division, Felix Khuner Concerto Competition, NCVS Young Violists Competition, as well as the Mondavi Young Artists Competition and the Bouchaine Young Artists Award. She enjoyed attending Music@Menlo, Aspen Music Festival, Taos School of Music, and Lucerne Festival Academy during her summers. She finds much joy in chamber music and sight reading with friends.
